My main point of contention is not with The Varsitarian’s stance on the RH Bill for it, indeed, is a controversial issue. A decade’s worth of debates have been exhausted for the matter, so I choose not to engage with the Lemon on that level. Instead, I am determined to address The Varsitarian on another matter: Intellectual Freedom.

Mainly, I would like to address this point made by The Varsitarian in the latter parts of its article because I feel it sums up the whole thing:

“In short, over and above academic freedom, the Catholic university exists for evangelical purposes. By going against the stand of the bishops, the Ateneo and La Salle professors are saying they don’t agree with the Church’s mission. If so, they’re free to leave. In fact, they must leave. They must resign if they have the courage of their conviction.”

Surely, this is a very bold statement regarding a very controversial topic. It is very critical that we dissect before we digest. How is academic freedom de-prioritized in favor of evangelical pursuits within Catholic Universities? Where is the logic in this? The very term “Catholic University” in itself is a paradox. Wherein “Catholic” means to be orthodox and dogmatic, whereas “University” means to be intellectually free to discover. It is to no one’s doubt that some of the best schools available to Filipinos are Catholic Universities. And in order for one to be competitive academically, one tends to seek out these Catholic Universities, but NOT for religious education. That is NOT a university’s purpose. If we turn our catholic universities into havens for evangelical pursuits, then what will differentiate these universities from the hundreds of churches, orders and ministries located around our country? If I wanted to learn about God, I’d go to a church, not a school. In De La Salle University, and most probably in Ateneo as well, there is room for intellectual debate and political and moral disparities. There is no such thing as moral impositions. The Green and Blue believe in the values of perspective and allowing their students (and faculty) to grow in these academic areas however they see fit. Apparently, in UST, it’s “Believe or get out”. And The Varsitarian refers to ADMU and DLSU professors as intellectual cowards?

Who’s the bigger coward here? The one who stands his ground firmly and shouts his beliefs at the top of his lungs knowing full-well there may be repercussions? Or the one who refuses to be questioned about his beliefs on the grounds of some deluded sense of religious gratification?

In DLSU, we don’t welcome argumentative pursuits with hostility. We engage in intellectual sparring because we know that a different perspective is key in academic success. We do not squander a person and propose he leave just because he has a different opinion. We believe this is what our country needs right now. The Varsitarian seems to believe in its Catholic mission of unity through uniformity. DLSU proposes that we be united, albeit not through uniformity, but rather, united in diversity through a toleration for each other’s differences.

In the end, I’d rather make moral mistakes as a human being, rather than succeed in life as a church’s puppet.

I salute you, DLSU writer. Thomasian ako pero hindi ako anti-RHbill and nagaagree ako sa point nito. Siguro kung susundin yung “Believe or get out”, wala na yung almost half ng University :(

Varsi writer, WHY? Sobrang tapang at talino mo ba para magsalita ng ganun? Tignan mo yung ginawa mo. :’(

Grabe. Who would’ve thought na yung ticket na mismo ang lalapit samin and biglang *boom* CDC, here we cooome? Well, not us! But it did happen!

At around 11:15am last Saturday while I was so into our Surveying group activity (I want us to finish ahead of time dahil pawis na pawis na ko at tirik na tirik na yung araw), my blockmate, Allen, called. He asked kung go daw ba ko manood ng CDC dahil may mga CFAD students na nagbebenta ng lowerbox tickets (same price!). Syempre! Sino bang tatanggi sa offer na ‘yon? May mga students na willing pumila for hours para lang makabili (like what we did last year! Almost 3 hours kaming pumila then naubusan!), pero ngayon, ayan na! Oo o hindi nalang! Napepressure na kami dahil may mga ibang interested buyers din! OMG! asdfghjkl hindi ko alam kung pano ko i-eexpress yung happiness na na-feel ko ‘nung nagdecide kami na bibilhin na namin! Then everything else happened so fast. Biglang nasa Carpark na kami ni Rona at bumibili ng 2012 UST Cheer Shirt. Blablabla *Insert adrenaline rush + excitement here* blablabla. The last thing I knew, we’re “Off to MOA Arena” na! Haha!

It feels like we were meant to be there. Kasi of all people na nasa pav, si Allen ang nilapitan. Kasi kahit willing kami magkaroon ng isang absent sa Design5, biglang sasabihin na walang Design! Sobrang galing. Serendipity. Naniniwala ako.

T’was an awesome day indeed. Sulit lahat-lahat ng ka-impulsive-an na ginawa namin! Biglang bili ng tickets. Biglang bili ng tshirts. No regrets, and never will I have any. Kahit talo ang UST, panalo naman ang UP (sobrang amazing ng stunts nila. Breathtaking, literally!). Kahit talo ang UST, naging masaya naman kami. Super! Awesome CDC experience, every bits and tidbits, from Allen’s call hanggang dulo! :)

Hello y’all! Been through tough days these past few weeks. Anyway, how are you guys?

Life has more to offer than stressful days. I had an amazing (and stress-free) one yesterday. Coffee & cake overdose with the best people @ The Coffee Beanery.

Happiness. Had 4 servings of cafe mocha and 4 slices of cheesecakes for 250php! Ha! Not bad! Long weekend extension please :)

Guess who’s exasperated right now? ME, obviously. And guess why, because classes are suspended! Yes, I know it’s a happy thing and I’m really grateful ‘cause God heard my prayers, but it’s not really the best thing when you force yourself to wake up and get going despite the lazy weather and brave the storms just to get to school, and when you get there (and you’re all soppy!), you see your blockmates and they tell you that your college secretary just announced suspension. Wow! I’ve been waiting for that all morning and while I was doing my Surveying homework. It took them an extra hour and a half (and lots of complaints from parents and students) to decide! How great is that? It would be better if they were considerate enough to make announcements before the earliest class in the entire university starts. Worse, it’s not the best idea to leave UST when it’s raining, especially when it’s raining extra hard! It wouldn’t be better if you stayed there too! Either ways, you are stranded! Unless, of course, you’d be willing to swim at the España-P.Noval-Dapitan-Lacson Ocean. And that’s exactly what I did. And tadaaaa, for the Nth time, I felt how itchy España’s 1foot-high flood is.

Anyway, life happens, I had conquered the knee-high last year, a foot-high is nothing compared to it. HAHA.

Let’s just have a good day! :D

1:48am and still up. 7:00am classes tomorrow. Good luck with that! Halfway finished with this Surveying homework. This is what you get when you forget your things-to-do - LESS SLEEP. What makes my situation worse is that I have to use my one and only pen (with ink as light as a gray colored pencil) to finish this. It’s actually harder than having a pencil that breaks all the time, (and you’re sooo lazy to get the sharpener inside your bag, so you keep putting the lead back and draw fast and be through with it) ‘cause with that one, you can actually force your lazy self to get the sharpener. What am I saying? I’m really sleepy and it’s raining haaaaard. No classes tomorrow please!

Hello guys! It’s been like a decade since I last posted something here. Been spending most of my days stressing about life, school, and other stuff. Been doing lots of drawings (thanks to my plates) and some readings lately (Yey. I finished 4 books in a busy month, how’s that? LOL). Exam week is approaching like a bullet train and our professors do nothing but give us tons of plates and requirements.

Trip to China was one of them. I’m expecting to have lots of 3AR3 bonding in our HOA3 class. That’s the upside of having Arch. Mercado as our HOA professor. I’m kinda enjoying these trips! :D

Well, we went to Binondo to have lunch. YUMMM. Nice food, though a bit pricey.

After delighting ourselves with not-so-chinese cuisine (and free ice cream), we went to Seng Guan Temple! :D

There’s a creepy, big guy looking directly at the camera! SCARY! LOOOOL! Meet Manuel, 3AR3’s Gentle Giant (as Arch. Mercado would say).

Anyway, all I can say about Chinese temples (particularly this one), is that they are very amazing! It’s wall carvings and idols were carefully and almost perfectly done! It’s like the whole temple itself had been carved from gigantic blocks of gold! From their idols to the very little details! It awed me a looooot!

Next stop, Japan. Huhu. These are the times I wish my camera was still in a good shape. I had to “borrow” my blockmates’ pictures just to share how f-u-n it is to visit these places :c hopefully, I can save enough to get it fixed or whatever.

Anyway, these are my blockmate’s (Agnes) shots. She’s a very kind person (if she isn’t, then I’m dead for getting and mildly editing her photos)! :)

Hi. It’s already July. Oh, how time flies soooo fast. Wala pang one month and we’re loaded with tons of school works already :( not only school, but also Lea’s homecoming made me busy these past few days. K. Mahirap talaga i-balance ang social life and archi life. LOL.

Anyway, despite the busy schedule, our class managed to visit a Sikh Temple in U.N. Avenue. Our HOA3 prof wanted us to experience India so that we can understand its architecture better. So tadaaaaa!

No shoes allowed inside the temple.

Hands and feet must be washed.

One great thing about the Sikhs is their generosity and their thing for equality. According to the speaker, they serve free food to about 500-2000 people, 24/7, whoever you are, whatever you do, they’ll be of service for you. SRSLY. It’s part of their belief. Anyway, after the talk, they gave us free lunch. Of course, it’s Indian food. I had a hard time finishing my meal because I don’t eat oatmeal and the one in the middle tasted like one!

3AR3 block lunch at the Sikh Temple. LOL. Though they served us oatmeal-like food, I still think that this is really an amazing experience. I think I would want to do this again some time in the future. Yeeey. Something to look forward to! :)

Dear Friend,

I am currently reading this book called The Perks of being a Wallflower. Wow. I can’t help but imagine Logan Lerman’s mesmerizing eyes while reading. So far, I am enjoying every part of it.

I had a boring day at school. Our Design professor dismissed us early. Later, mom, my sister, and I, will go to the hospital to visit my sister-in-law. She gave birth to my niece last Monday. I am very excited to see them.
